What a participant does

Three bursts of noise, one after another. Exactly one of them has a tiny silent gap cut into its middle; you say which. The gap shrinks while you are right and grows when you are wrong, converging on the shortest gap you can find. Eight of these runs are shuffled together, so you cannot tell which kind of noise you are on.
